What is the NDIS?

The National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) was launched by the Australian Government in 2016 as a way to support eligible participants who require additional support. The NDIS was designed to help eligible participants with disabilities to improve their quality of life. It does this by providing funding for three types of support services:

  1. Capacity Building Supports: This covers the cost of appointments with various allied health professionals who are able to access NDIS funding and can provide assistance in a wide range of areas. These include:
  • Occupational Therapy: Occupational Therapists can help people accessing the NDIS to accomplish everyday tasks and achieve specific goals.
  • Physiotherapy: Physiotherapists offer a variety of services to participants accessing the NDIS, including assistance with maintaining and improving a person’s mobility.
  • Speech Pathology: Speech Pathologists can provide support to those accessing the NDIS, who require support with communication and difficulty swallowing.
  • Psychology: Psychologists are trained to assist those who may require support with their mental health. Psychologists are also able to provide support to those who have difficulties with behaviour and coping skills.
  1. Capital Supports: This covers the cost of assistive technology and modifications to the home or car which are necessary so that a person can safely and easily carry out tasks on their own.
  2. Core Supports: This covers the cost of transport needs, day programs and support workers, which are vital for maintaining a beneficial routine and a full life.

What are the Benefits of the NDIS?

The NDIS gives participants the power to choose which services will be most beneficial to supporting and improving their ongoing physical and mental wellbeing. A participant can elect to work with allied health professionals of their choice, including Occupational Therapy, Speech Pathology, psychology or Physiotherapy. This increased autonomy not only dignifies participants but also allows them to adapt the support services they’re using in response to their own developing needs.

How Can I Apply for the NDIS?

If you feel that you, or a family member, may be eligible for NDIS funding then you can contact your Local Area Coordinator (LAC) for further support:

  • Wanslea Early Childhood Early Intervention (ages 0-6)
  • APM & Mission Australia (ages 7-65)

You can also complete an NDIS Access Request Form (available to download from the NDIS website). If you’re already working with therapists then they can also provide assistance and further evidence in the form of written assessments.
